Fire Danger and Your Home

Living in Blueridge, we’re right on the edge of the forest. That location has plenty of advantages: fantastic trails, lovely views, nature being close at hand, not to mention privacy, quiet, and solitude. But with the forest also comes the risk of wildfire, and we’re not immune.
The trees we love are vulnerable to drought, insect damage, and heat. And fires in those trees don’t just stop when they get to suburban homes. The District of North Vancouver maintains a map showing the risk of wildfire throughout the district that you may find helpful. Here’s a snapshot of Blueridge from that map:
We have a responsibility to protect ourselves against wildfire to the best of our ability. Fortunately, the good people of FireSmart.bc have prepared a booklet that can help you determine your home’s fire risk and show you ways to reduce it.
FireSmart BC Homeowner’s Manual
Our part of the north shore gets a lot of rain, but wildfire is still possible. Read up on your risk and take steps to make you and your family safer.
Another way to determine your risk is to get a free wildfire risk assessment for your home. These are offered by DNV Fire & Rescue as part of the FireSmart program. These assessments will help you understand what changes you might make to your home to reduce your fire risk.
